That evening, Dateline NBC aired an hour-long program titled “Little Boy Lost.” Reporter Kate Snow interviewed Desiree and Kaine together in Portland. They talked about upcoming summer plans. Kaine was taking the family to California. Desiree said they had a lot of camping trips planned and they had reserved a houseboat for a week in late summer. “He’ll be home before August,” she said.

Kaine called Kyron “the kind of son every father hopes they’re going to have.” Desiree laughed about how Kyron liked to play outside and get dirty. When asked how the parents and stepparents got along, Desiree explained that they made sacrifices for the good of the kids. She said they directed their emotional energy at the children, not each other.

Desiree recounted the events of the afternoon of June 4. When the school secretary called to tell her Kyron was missing, “I cussed a little bit, then said, ‘What the hell is going on?’” Desiree said. She called Terri, who told her how she had taken Kyron to the science fair. “There was something in my gut that just didn’t feel good,” Desiree said.

Snow asked Kaine how he had reacted when he was told about the murder-for-hire plot. “I didn’t believe it at first,” he said. The reporter asked if he now believed Terri was capable of hurting a child. “If you’d asked me before this situation, my answer is no. Based on what I know now, I don’t know. I think anything is possible based on the way things have gone the last few weeks.”

Snow had also filmed in Medford. Desiree had taken her on an emotional tour of Kyron’s bedroom, the one he shared with Quinn. Kyron’s Batman sheets and pillowcase were still rumpled from the last time the seven-year-old had visited. She didn’t tell the reporter that her therapist had suggested that, someday, Desiree make some small changes to Kyron’s room. “It’s hard because he’s not here, but also comforting to have his stuff around too,” she told Snow, pointing to his miniature cars that were where he had left them. On the floor.

“I was watching the investigation right from the start,” Tony told Snow. Sitting next to Desiree, Tony explained the three events that had convinced him that Terri was implicated in Kyron’s disappearance.

Strike one: Terri’s initial reaction to giving up her privacy for the sake of finding Kyron. Terri had “bristled” the evening of June 4 when Tony told the parents that they could expect to be investigated and that there would be no secrets. “She seemed to feel persecuted,” he said. “But I still tried to keep an open mind.”

Strike two: Terri’s cell phone records didn’t match up with where she said she had been on June 4.

Strike three: Terri failed her polygraphs.

Plus, the police had not checked Terri off their list. Then had come word that she had wanted Kaine killed. Tony and Desiree had gone from being suspicious to being convinced.

Snow asked if Terri had had help. “Maybe,” Tony and Desiree told her.
